Carnival 2019: homemade costumes with recycled materials
27/02/2019
GF HOTELES VICTORIA
The Tenerife Carnival is the major annual event for lovers of celebration, color, and fantasy. For approximately a month, the streets of Santa Cruz de Tenerife—and other parts of the island—are filled with music, costumes, and a festive atmosphere. The growing importance of this celebration over the decades has made it one of the most famous carnivals in the world , alongside other iconic ones such as those in Brazil, Venice, and Mardi Gras in New Orleans.
The true essence of the Tenerife Carnival lies in the atmosphere and the fun, not necessarily in measuring who has the most expensive costume. While we can mention major events like the murga finals, the comparsa competition, or the Carnival Queen Gala, where costumes are made with care, dedication, and investment, the street party always takes on a different character, where recycling and ingenuity go hand in hand.
It's not the first time that we at the Hotel GF Victoria***** GL have highlighted our commitment to waste reduction, and that's why we thought it would be a good idea to continue promoting sustainability, even during Carnival. Below, we offer some costume ideas —for both children and adults—made entirely from recycled materials. You'll see that it's a perfect opportunity to enjoy quality family time, creating these original costumes and teaching the little ones about sustainability.

The fascinating world of cardboard
Who would have thought that old boxes could be such a great way to unleash creativity? Cardboard is undoubtedly the most affordable material you can find for costumes , offering a multitude of possibilities. The dinosaur costume is already a classic online, but we encourage you to try more adventurous options like armor, masks, helmets, or wings.

Why sew when you can do it with bags?
You're surely aware of the problem our planet is currently facing with excessive plastic waste . This is one of the reasons that motivated GF Hotels to eliminate single-use plastics in its establishments, but it has also inspired us to create fun carnival costume ideas. We've all made carnival costumes out of trash bags since we were little, but the range of colors and textures available on the market today will allow us to create some truly fun options. You can also use other plastic materials like straws, disposable spoons, duct tape, or balloons for dresses, skirts, and accessories. We guarantee the final result will be a huge success!

From Tenerife to the depths of the sea
The central theme of the 2019 Tenerife Carnival is the deep sea , which means there's a whole universe of color to inspire you to create your own costume. The streets of Santa Cruz will be filled this year with jellyfish, seahorses, divers, octopuses… and even mermaids! As we mentioned before, the essence of the carnival lies in the celebration, not in how much you spend on a costume. That's why we're suggesting some examples of what you can create with soda bottles, old socks, or a little paint and cardboard. Remember, the party is meant to be enjoyed—especially with family—so don't let costume making keep you up at night; just focus on getting out there and having a great time. Amazing moments await you at the Tenerife Carnival!
